Andy Mitchum, Ph.D.

I am a NC Licensed Psychologist with 30 years’ experience assessing and treating a broad range of problems.  Most of my patients are adults, although I have worked selectively with all ages from 6 well into the 80s in individual, couple, family, and group therapies.  As part of a psychiatric practice, I frequently work with depression, Bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress, attention-deficit disorders, and combinations of medical and emotional problems, and I chiefly enjoy working with anxiety disorders of all kinds, including Panic and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders and phobias.  I perform psychological assessment from time to time, chiefly for issues of attention, learning differences, and memory.  I hold degrees from Wake Forest University and UNC-Greensboro, and before helping form Crossroads in 1997 worked and trained in a variety of hospitals (medical, psychiatric, rehabilitation, VA), outpatient clinics, emergency services, and private practice.
As a therapist, I take on many roles – listener, advisor, consultant, teacher, personal trainer, role-player, confession-taker, calming presence, advocate, emotional translator, and referee to name some.  There is a time for support – my first job is always to create a safe, positive relationship within which you can acknowledge and define what you most truly need.  After that, it becomes time for action.  From a positive, practical standpoint, my mission is to draw out and draw on the wisdom, skills, perspectives, and strengths you already have, then add things that can make more sense in your life.  While good therapy will probably mean going into some of your history and may very well mean facing painful things, great therapy looks to what is now and next, finding and creating opportunities in the moment to learn something about handling yourself and the stresses you face.  In all likelihood, we create personal projects and practical exercise in sessions to apply between sessions so that you can discover and apply solutions in the real world, so that therapy becomes truly portable and more fully brings home any changes you want or need.  Often enough, time spent in the office is consulting – it’s what you do with it on your own time that really becomes therapy.  From there, I am supposed to become as unnecessary as possible, while therapy goes with you.  Since life can always interrupt things, I think of the life of therapy as the present session anyway, but it always helps to work together on expectations and make them as open as possible.  Whatever goals we may set, and whatever goals don’t get reached, therapy is always a success when we both know when and why it stops.
I am blessed to be part of a spiritually sensitive practice with other healers, where people of all backgrounds and beliefs are welcome and respected.  Personally, I am active in church and music, not to mention marriage and child-raising.  To balance the needs of my work and personal lives, I offer extended hours one evening per week and one Saturday morning per month.  As these tend to be in high demand, prospective patients should do all they can to ensure flexibility to make daytime appointments.

Teresa T. Hurst, PA-C

Teresa Hurst, PA-C graduated from the Medical College of Georgia Physician Assistant program in 1988.  She is licensed in both North Carolina and Georgia, and is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.  She joined Crossroads Psychiatric Group in May, 2016, with prior experience in Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Medical Oncology, and OBGYN.
At Crossroads, Teresa takes care of the medication needs of her patients.  She treats Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, PTSD, OCD, Adjustment disorder, Post-partum depression, and Attention Deficit Disorders.  In order to provide the best patient care possible, Teresa enjoys learning and stays up to date on the latest advancements in psychiatric medicine.  She sees mostly adults but is happy seeing adolescents as well.
Making each person feel comfortable during their visit is important to Teresa and she wants them to feel at ease.  She believes a peaceful atmosphere will help patients open up, and then be able to discuss their needs more readily.  In turn, that helps her make the correct diagnosis and formulate a treatment plan.
Teresa is a firm believer in psychotherapy and recommends her patients undergo counseling.  One of the benefits of treatment at Crossroads is the Licensed  Counselors on the team.  Teresa and the counselors work together concerning mutual patients, in order to improve their outcomes and help each patient live a healthier, happier life through good mental health.
Teresa and her husband, Dow, both Georgia natives, have lived in Greensboro since 2004.  In her spare time, Teresa enjoys sitting on the couch reading, with one of their cats in her lap.  She also enjoys various crafts, playing the guitar, piano, and singing bluegrass gospel music.
